In the realm of food, food safety is not just a Global Standard but a fundamental, impacting global health, economies, and sustainable development. Efforts to promote food safety globally are spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), their mandate is to invite everyone in the food supply chain to play their part in making food safe – from farm to plate. These efforts are underpinned by various internationally and nationally recognised food safety Standards to provide a more consistent and structured approach to total food safety management at large. 

Many in the Australian food industry had more than acceptable food safety programs in place before the pandemic, yet still faced unprecedented challenges as it unfolded. Supply chains and business continuity were most significantly impacted, and a new level of risk management evolved, above and beyond any seen previously. Across the industry cleaning, hygiene, and sanitation practices have been transformed and a much sharper focus has developed around sustainability.

Within Australia, food and beverage packaging makes up 43.3% of Australia’s $2.7bn (2023) packaging industry, and so it is a complete no-brainer when it comes to considering the recycled content verification scheme to valid recycled content claims.
